Monotype Printmaking Demonstration by Martha Jeffrey Galuszka
The objective of this demonstration will be to remove some of the mystique behind printmaking processes and techniques, and showing methods that can be replicated in anyone’s home or studio with simple and easily acquired supplies, without the need for a printing press.
The Demo will include printmaking terminology, discussion of differences in properties of oil based and water based inks, types of printmaking papers, using other safe non-toxic materials, establishing a safe non-solvent studio set-up, and related subjects. I will also provide at least one handout for the audience to take home.
I will demonstrate image development using water-based inks, by applying them to basic printmaking plate materials, with both brayers and brushes, and pulling prints both by hand rubbing and the use of a roller, onto a variety of papers.
In addition, I will show some methods of adding interest to print surfaces with the use of texturizing techniques, stencils, collage and simple tools, plus applying final touches to finished prints with other media, such as pencil, pastel, paints.
Finishing a print in a step-by-step fashion during the demo is not of primary concern, but prints using some of these techniques will be available as examples, in addition to referencing the four prints I have on exhibit in the show.
