Westerly Library and Wilcox Park is thrilled to be able to offer free seeds to our community, year-round, through our Seed Library!
The mission of the Seed Library is to encourage community members to grow their own food and gardens. Through access to free seeds and educational programs, the seed library project aims to guide participants in garden care, provide ongoing resources, information, and support.
Our Seed library is located on the 2nd floor of the library, and is accessible during normal library hours. Within it, you’ll find a wide assortment of vegetable, herb, and ornamental (flower) seeds, including many heirloom varieties.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:
Step 1: Sign up and Borrow
Anyone can use our Seed Library, but first you must fill out a membership form (blank forms are available next to the Seed Library). Rhode Island library cardholders may take up to 10 seed envelopes per visit. Non-cardholders may take up to 5. Each envelope contains a small pinch of seeds – enough for 2-3 plants of each variety.
Step 2: Plant
Plant your seeds! We have plenty of resources for gardeners of all levels. Check out YouTube Channel for videos to seed starting and vegetable gardening, or our large selection of gardening books, which are available for checkout with your library card.
Step 3: Save Seeds and Donate
At the end of the season, save seeds from your strongest plants and donate them back to the seed library! We also accept new or opened non-GMO seed packets. Your donations will help us continue to provide seeds to the community for years to come.
