The legendary athlete, Ellison Brown ("Tarzan") has a newly enhanced stone memorial in Wilcox Park. Grandson and master stone mason, Ted Brown, has elevated the original 1981 stone marker to new heights by creating a stone pedestal and adjacent paving consisting of a pattern with bluestone and granite. Located just inside the park entrance at the corner of Wilcox Ave and Grove Ave, this new memorial certainly is a fitting tribute to Tarzan.
Tarzan's accomplishments include competing in the 1936 Olympics as well as winning the Boston Marathon twice. He was born and raised in the Potter Hill section of Westerly.
The dedication ceremony will consist of two drummers from the Narragansett Tribe performing two tribal songs. Speakers and family will address the audience on this special occasion. Please come and join us in celebrating this new park feature!
