Westerly Sun Column | Half a Year Left to Make Your 2026 Goals
July 07, 2026
Believe it or not, as of last Thursday, July 2nd, we are halfway through 2026! Depending what the first 182.5 days were like, this realization might make you feel shock, glee, regret, or some other combination of feelings. Regardless of how you feel about it, the midpoint of the year is a great time to reflect, revisit any resolutions you made back in January, and, perhaps, make some new goals for the back half of the year.
One of the simplest – and for many, most achievable – goals we hear is to read more. There has been a ton of research done on the benefits of reading for all age groups, such as improving memory and focus, promoting language development, and even lowering stress. Taking advantage of your library card is a great way to start working on this goal, as it gives you easy access to books for every interest, as well as a massive collection of eBooks and audiobooks. And, yes, audiobooks DO count as reading! We always have a variety of books displays, both in-person at the library and on our online catalog, to provide inspiration, if you’re having trouble deciding on a book. If you need a bit of a push to get started, I recommend joining our Summer Reading Program (there is a version for every age group!) where each book you read will earn you a ticket for our prize drawings. Not only will you make progress toward your personal goal, you may get something tangible in return!
According to the Pew Research Center, the most common New Year’s resolutions, across all age groups, revolve around health and wellness. If you also set a goal this year to take better care of your body and mind, a trip to the library and park should be on your agenda. From Essentrics and yoga classes in the park to sound baths, meditation, and family walks, our calendar is full of programs that will support your physical and mental well-being. It may also be worth checking out some of our ongoing clubs and meetups, where you can hone a new skill and connect with others, which can both positive affect your mental health.
It’s also highly possible that resolutions are not your thing. The same Pew study I referenced earlier found that only 3 in 10 Americans made a one in 2024, so you are certainly not alone. On the off-chance that this is you, and that you’re still reading this column, I’m here to remind you that libraries are built on core values like equitable access and unbiased service. In short, we will not judge you in the least! I’m only here to remind you that, resolutions aside, I can confidently say that regular visits to the library are sure to make the 177 days left in the year more productive and gratifying. Mark my words!
